“Come to think of it, I saw that ice cream truck, too,” Brent said. “It had a flat tire, and the driver’s face was green. I wish I’d known you were interested in him.”

Crane kissed me, made a fuss over the dogs, and locked his gun in its special case. Then he joined us at the oak table. Ever since the tornado when Brent had helped me search for Crane, the two men had forged an easy friendship.

I remembered that time all too well. Crane lost somewhere in Foxglove Corners; I, in this very kitchen, not knowing whether he had survived the deadly storm; and Brent promising to stay with me until my husband came home.

“I chased that truck through Shell Lake Farms,” Crane said. “It got away from me.” He considered that a personal affront.

I poured him a cup of coffee and refilled Brent’s mug. “The truck is our only clue. According to Henry McCullough, it was on Park Street around the time Sky disappeared.”

“It may have been,” Crane said. “Henry just heard music. It shouldn’t be that difficult to track down an ice cream truck in October.”

“No, it shouldn’t. But all we seem to be doing is talking about it.”

Brent took a sip of coffee. “I don’t think the green guy is peddling ice cream cones.”

“Neither do I,” I said. “He sold Randy a candy bar, probably because that’s all he had on hand. He uses the van for something else. Carrying off dogs is my guess.”

“Tell me what to do and I’ll do it,” Brent said.

“Just help us look for Sky and the truck. They’re out there somewhere.”

“I’m your man,” he said.

Crane and Brent conversed in an amiable fashion about hunting and the hazards of the exploding deer population while I fed the dogs and got our dinner together. The more I used my arm, the more aware I was of how much it hurt, but I tried to hide my discomfort. Finally I brought the last dish in from the kitchen and lit the candles on the table.

When we sat down to eat, I told Brent about Jill’s anonymous tip. That led to a discussion of Caroline Meilland and the copycat activist, Carolann, who was quite literally following in her footsteps.

“You might also come to the next M.A.R.A. meeting, Brent,” I said. “There’s something strange about that organization. I can’t figure it out, but I agree with Jill’s tipster. Emil Schiller needs watching.”

“I think it’s time for you to step away from these goings on, Jennet,” Crane said. “I don’t want you to place yourself in the line of fire. Let us men find this green man and watch Schiller.”

“I agree.” That was Brent looking unusually stern. “And maybe Jennet should get away from Marston High School. It’s a damned battlefield. Her life isn’t worth that paltry salary.”

Crane looked at me. Darn. I’d meant to tell him about the rock, but other matters had distracted me. I told him now, adding the assistant principal had called in the police.
